or most of us, the word ‘’decoupage'’ conjures images of grade-school craft projects and Victorian-era bibelots covered with flowers and angels and coated with yellowing shellac.

But these days, there’s a whole new world of decoupage, and it’s finding a growing place in home decor.

‘’We can’t make the stuff fast enough,'’ says Annie Modica, who launched a line of decoupage home accessories eight years ago and now has a dozen employees turning out more than 30 hand-crafted designs on trays, boxes, stools, cache pots, and more at the San Rafael, Calif., company that bears her name.

A former elementary-school art teacher who learned her decoupage skills in the classroom, Modica uses vintage images of sea creatures, bugs, animals and fruit in her work, which she sells to more than 200 stores across the country.
